How much does a website cost for a small business?

What a small business website costs: one-time and ongoing costs, the factors that change the price, and what is usually quoted separately.

Short answer

It depends on how many pages you need, who writes the content, the features (booking, payments, integrations, languages) and what happens after launch. As a reference, our published website packages start at $1,000 for a focused landing page, $3,000 for a complete company website and $8,000 for e-commerce or custom features.

A website can be a weekend project on a template or a months-long build with custom features, and both can be the right choice. The price depends far less on "a website" than on what the website has to do for your business. This guide breaks down where the money goes, what changes the price and what to ask before you buy.

One-time costs and running costs

Think about a website in two parts. The one-time cost is planning, design, writing, building and launching. The running cost is what keeps it online and useful afterwards. Many budgets only plan for the first part.

  • One-time: discovery and page plan, design, copywriting, development, setting up forms and analytics, testing on phones and computers, and launch.
  • Running: domain name, hosting, paid plugins or software, security updates, backups, content changes and new pages.

What changes the price

  • Number of pages and page types. A one-page landing site and a twenty-page company site with service, location and project pages are very different builds.
  • Who writes the content. Writing clear, persuasive copy is real work. If you supply finished text and photos, the price is lower than if the agency writes and sources them.
  • Design approach. Adapting a template is faster than a custom design system built around your brand.
  • Features. Online booking, payments, a shop, member areas, calculators and connections to your CRM all add design, build and testing time.
  • Languages and markets. A second language, especially a right-to-left one such as Arabic, means a second set of content and layouts.
  • Content management. A CMS your team can edit takes more setup than a site only a developer can change, but it saves money over time.
  • Speed and search basics. Fast loading, clean page structure and correct titles and descriptions should be part of any professional build.

DIY builder, freelancer or agency?

A website builder you set up yourself costs the least money and the most of your time. It can work well for a simple site if you are comfortable writing and designing. A freelancer can be a good fit for a clear, contained project. An agency usually costs more but brings strategy, design, writing, development and search under one plan, which matters when the website has to bring in leads, not just exist.

Whichever route you choose, make sure you own the domain, the hosting account and the content, and that you can move the site if you need to.

Our published website packages

To make planning easier, we publish starting prices for websites:

  • Launch, from $1,000 per project: a focused landing page or compact marketing website, with mobile-first design, contact forms, analytics and speed and SEO basics.
  • Growth, from $3,000 per project: a complete company website with full site structure, a custom design system, copy support for key pages and a CMS your team can edit.
  • Custom, from $8,000 per project: e-commerce, integrations with CRM, payments or booking, multi-language or multi-market content and custom features.

Hosting, paid software, photography, extensive translation and third-party licenses are quoted separately when needed. All figures are starting points in US dollars and exclude taxes. We confirm scope and price after a free review.

Costs people forget

  • Photography and video, if you do not have good images of your work, team or premises.
  • Moving content and redirects from an old site, so you keep the search visibility you already have.
  • Legal pages, cookie settings and accessibility checks.
  • Training your team to update the site.
  • Updates after launch, because a site that never changes slowly falls behind.

How to get an accurate quote

Write a one-page brief: what the website should achieve, who it is for, the pages you think you need, the features that matter, examples of sites you like and your budget range. Share what already exists, such as a logo, photos, copy or an old website. The clearer the brief, the closer the first quote will be to the final price.

ChecklistBefore you approve a website quote

  • You know which pages and features are included.
  • It is clear who writes the content and who supplies photos.
  • Forms, analytics and basic SEO are part of the build.
  • The site is tested on phones as well as computers.
  • You will own the domain, hosting and content.
  • Running costs after launch are listed separately.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a small business website cost to run each year?
It depends on the domain, hosting, any paid software and how often you change the site. Ask for running costs as a separate list from the build price, so you can plan for both.
Is a template website good enough for a small business?
Often, yes, for a simple site. It becomes limiting when you need many service or location pages, custom features, strong SEO structure or a design that sets you apart from competitors.
How long does it take to build a small business website?
It depends on the number of pages, how quickly content and approvals arrive, and the features. A focused landing page is much quicker than a full company website with custom features. Agree a timeline with clear review points before work starts.
Does the website price include SEO?
Our packages include speed and SEO basics, such as clean structure, titles and descriptions. Ongoing SEO, like content plans and technical work over months, is a separate service with its own monthly price.
