SEO vs paid ads: which should a small business do first?

SEO or paid ads first? How each works, how fast each can bring customers, what each costs, and a simple way to decide for a small business.

Short answer

If you need enquiries soon, start with paid ads: a campaign can show as soon as it is approved, and you control the daily budget. If you can wait, SEO builds traffic you do not pay for per click. Most small businesses do best starting ads on a sound website while basic SEO work begins alongside.

SEO and paid ads both put your business in front of people who are searching for what you sell. They work very differently, though, and a small business with a limited budget usually has to choose where to start. This guide explains the trade-offs and gives you a simple way to decide.

How each one works

Paid ads, such as Google Ads, show your business at the top of results or across apps and websites. You pay when someone clicks or sees the ad, and the ads stop when you stop paying. SEO, or search engine optimization, is the work that helps your own pages appear in the unpaid results: a technically sound website, pages that clearly answer what customers search for, and signals such as reviews and links that build trust.

Speed: ads are faster

Ads can start bringing visits as soon as a campaign is approved and running. SEO takes longer, because search engines need to find, understand and trust your pages, and competitors are working on the same searches. Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO says it plainly: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." Be wary of anyone who promises a specific position or date.

Cost: different shapes

With ads, you pay for every click for as long as the campaign runs, plus any management fee. You stay in control: on Google Ads you set an average daily budget, and Google says that in a billing month you are not charged more than 30.4 times that amount. With SEO, you mostly pay for work: audits, fixes, content and ongoing improvements. Clicks from unpaid results cost nothing, so good SEO tends to become more valuable over time, while ad costs continue as long as you want the traffic.

For reference, our published prices start at $1,500 a month for paid media management, with ad spend paid separately to the platform, and at $1,050 a month for SEO. We confirm the right scope after a free review.

When to start with paid ads

  • You need enquiries or sales this month, for example for a launch, a new location or a quiet season.
  • You want to learn quickly which services, offers and messages customers respond to.
  • Your website is new and has little search visibility yet.
  • You sell in a market where the top of the page is mostly ads anyway.

When to start with SEO

  • You can wait for results and want a steady source of customers you do not pay for per click.
  • Your website already gets some search traffic and has clear technical problems or missing pages.
  • Customers research carefully before they buy and read guides, reviews and comparisons.
  • You are a local business and your Google Business Profile, reviews and location pages need work.

Why most businesses end up doing both

The two help each other. Ads show you which searches and messages bring paying customers; SEO can then build pages around those searches. Good SEO pages make better landing pages for ads, and a strong unpaid presence alongside your ads makes your business look more established. A common sequence for a small business is: fix the website basics, start a focused ad campaign on the searches closest to buying, and begin SEO on the same services at the same time.

Fix the foundation first

Whatever you choose, the website has to be ready. Ads send visitors to a page; if that page is slow, unclear or hard to use on a phone, you pay for clicks that never become enquiries. SEO cannot help much either if the site has technical problems. Before you spend on either, check that your key pages load quickly, say clearly what you do and where, and make it easy to call, book or send a message. Make sure conversions are tracked, so you can see which channel brings customers.

ChecklistA quick way to decide

  • Do you need customers within the next few weeks? Start with paid ads.
  • Is your website fast, clear and tracking enquiries? If not, fix that first.
  • Can you keep paying for clicks month after month? If not, start SEO alongside.
  • Do you already get some search traffic? SEO can grow it.
  • Is your Google Business Profile complete, with recent reviews? Local SEO first.
  • Set a review date to compare cost per enquiry from each channel.

Frequently asked questions

How long does SEO take to work for a small business?
It depends on your website, your competitors and how much work is done. Some fixes help quickly; competitive searches take longer. No one can guarantee a ranking or a date, so judge SEO work on progress you can measure each month.
Can I stop paying for ads once SEO works?
Some businesses reduce ad spend as unpaid traffic grows, others keep both because ads cover searches and audiences SEO cannot reach. Compare the cost per enquiry from each channel before you decide.
Should a local business start with Google Business Profile?
For many local service businesses, yes. A complete profile with accurate details, photos and recent reviews helps you show up in map results, and it supports both your SEO and your ads.
