GA4 conversions every service business should track

The GA4 key events a service business should set up first: form submissions, calls, bookings, quote requests and email clicks, plus how to check they work.

Google Analytics 4 records a lot of activity by default: page views, scrolls, outbound clicks and more. What it does not know, until you tell it, is which of those actions actually matter to your business. For a service business, that usually means the moment someone gets in touch.

GA4 calls these important actions key events (earlier versions of the interface called them conversions). Marking the right ones is what lets you see which channels, campaigns and pages bring in inquiries, and it is what Google Ads and other platforms use to optimize your spend.

Start with the actions that create a lead

Most service businesses only need a handful of key events. Track these first:

  • Contact or quote form submission: the main inquiry form on your site. Track a successful submission, not just a click on the submit button.
  • Phone call click: a tap on your tap-to-call phone number, especially from mobile visitors.
  • Booking completed: if you use an online booking tool, the confirmation step.
  • Email link click: a click on your mailto address, if you show one.
  • Messaging click: a tap on a WhatsApp or chat link, if you offer one.

Each of these should be a separate event with a clear name, such as form_submit_quote or click_to_call. Clear names make reports readable months later.

Track the real submission, not the attempt

The most common tracking mistake is counting a form as submitted when someone merely clicks the button, even if the form shows an error. The reliable approaches are to fire the event when the thank-you page loads, or when the form's success message appears. If your form plugin or website builder has a built-in GA4 integration, check exactly what it counts.

Know the limits of call tracking

A click on a phone number tells you someone intended to call, not that a conversation happened. It is still a useful signal. If phone calls are a large share of your inquiries, consider call tracking numbers, which can record whether a call connected and how long it lasted. Use them carefully, so your business number stays consistent wherever it appears online.

Add a few supporting events

Once the key events work, a few secondary events help you understand intent without counting as leads: views of your pricing or service area page, downloads of a brochure or price list and clicks on directions. Keep these as ordinary events, not key events, so your conversion numbers stay honest.

Connect GA4 to your ad accounts carefully

Link GA4 to Google Ads so you can see campaign data alongside site behavior. Then decide where each platform should get its conversion data. Many advertisers use Google Ads' own conversion tracking for bidding and use GA4 for analysis, which avoids counting the same lead twice. Whatever you choose, write it down.

Respect consent

If your site uses a cookie consent banner, some visitors will decline analytics. GA4's numbers will then be lower than your real inquiry count. That is expected. Compare GA4 against your actual leads from your inbox or CRM every month, so you know the gap and are not surprised by it.

Test everything yourself

Use GA4's DebugView or the Realtime report, then submit your own form, tap your phone number on your own phone and complete a test booking. Confirm each key event appears once, with the right name. Repeat this after any website change, because redesigns and plugin updates often break tracking silently.

ChecklistGA4 key events setup checklist

  • List every way a customer can get in touch through the site.
  • Create one clearly named event for each, firing on success only.
  • Mark the lead-creating events as key events in GA4.
  • Keep supporting actions as ordinary events, not key events.
  • Decide which platform supplies conversions for ad bidding, and record it.
  • Test every event yourself with DebugView or Realtime.
  • Compare GA4 key events with real leads each month.
  • Re-test after every website change.
